Walnut — Juglans spp.
Origin & traceability

Origin: imported from North America, crafted in Vietnam

The walnut used by our partner workshops is predominantly black walnut (Juglans nigra) imported from sustainably managed North American forests — one of the most transparent hardwood supply chains in the world, with origin papers per bundle. Vietnam acts as the crafting hub: high skill, fair cost, export back to the EU and US.

EUDR · Low risk

EUDR & Lacey Act

North American hardwood is considered low-risk under both the EUDR and the Lacey Act, thanks to established forestry and long-documented trade. The crux for Vietnam-made goods is an unbroken document chain from the US exporter to the finished product — precisely the part Archilion audits per shipment.

A pleasure under both machine and hand tools; crisp cuts, fine detail — the favorite of skilled makers.

Heartwood very long-lived indoors, heirloom-grade; not for outdoor use.

Compared to European species

Against European walnut (Juglans regia), which runs lighter and greyer, American black walnut is darker and more uniform — exactly the "walnut tone" that premium European furniture means today. US supply is also steadier and more transparent than the scarce European stock.

Frequently asked questions

What EU and US buyers most often ask about this species.

Is walnut processed in Vietnam EUDR/Lacey compliant?

Yes — the raw timber comes from North America with full origin papers and is classed as low-risk. The one requirement is an unbroken document chain from the US supplier through the workshop to the export container — exactly what Archilion audits.

Is walnut durable even though it is softer than oak?

Yes — the slightly lower hardness does not affect furniture lifespan, and walnut is markedly more stable, with little seasonal warping or cracking. Well-built walnut furniture is heirloom furniture.

Does walnut change color over time?

Slightly: under light, the dark tone warms and lightens a little over the years — a natural trait of the species. UV-inhibiting finishes slow it down; many owners value that patina as the mark of real wood.

Which finish shows walnut at its best?

Clear oil or hardwax-oil — the natural color needs no stain, and practically nobody stains it. Matte PU is the choice when tabletops need stronger water resistance.
